America's plus-size fliers have a new helpful carry-on that there will be plenty of room for.
The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) and the Association for Airline Passenger Rights (AAPR) have recently joined forces to publish a four-page brochure titled "Travel Tips for People of Size."
The brochure recommends that passengers of size book a second seat when flying Southwest, American and Jet Blue, and that United may require passengers of size to purchase a second seat if they are unable to fit in a single seat with both armrests down. The brochure also suggests that travelers check their airline's policy at the time of flying.
"Airline travel, in particular, is such a hot topic for fat people," said Peggy Howell, spokeswoman for the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance told MSNBC. "Some have mobility issues and the trip from the curb to the gate is daunting. Some people are concerned that they may not be able to move quickly enough to make connecting flights. And we often get questions about which airlines have policies regarding the purchase of two seats."
The digital handbook offers larger passengers ideas for the best way to plan, pack and book their travel. The final page in the brochure highlights each airline's passengers-of-size policy along with their strengths and weaknesses depending on the traveler's destination.
Some of the brochure's recommendations include:
--Choose an airline that is people of size friendly. Most US carriers will enforce the purchase of a second seat if you cannot lower both arm rests and fasten seat belt using one extender.
--To manage costs, consider sharing your second seat with another person of size and purchase three seats in a row.
--Consider bringing your own sandwich so you can eat without a table at meal time.
--Smile and say hello to your seatmates…It is harder to be annoyed with someone if they are being nice.
