NEW YORK – New York City's Grand Central Terminal will celebrate its 100th birthday with a brass band, a "Sex and the City" star and an appearance by Caroline Kennedy. It was Kennedy's mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who spearheaded efforts to save Grand Central from the wrecking ball in the 1970s. After a major restoration in the 1990s, it's now a popular tourist destination. Friday's birthday party takes place exactly 100 years after the keys to Grand Central were first given to the stationmaster on Feb. 1, 1913. Kennedy is the honorary chairwoman of the Grand Central Centennial Committee. Other speakers will include actress Cynthia Nixon and former Mets star Keith Hernandez. The West Point Brass and Percussion Band will perform the world premiere of "Grand Central Centennial Fanfare." | |
